If the divine is everywhere, then a wandering mind has not gone anywhere else.

The practice

Let the mind wander wherever it wants. Wherever it lands, hold that it has landed on the same thing it would have found anywhere — that there is no location it can reach which is outside. Do not call it back. There is nowhere to call it back from.

What it works on

The complete opposite of dharana 48, and both are in the text. Where that one refuses every landing place, this one accepts all of them on the grounds that they are the same place, and arrives at the same stillness from the other side.

Notes

  • Excellent on a day when concentration will not hold. It asks for none.
  • Try this and dharana 48 on consecutive days to feel the difference.

Practise gently

Shoonyaka offers educational and contemplative material, not medical, psychological or religious authority. Nothing here diagnoses or treats any condition. Stop any practice that leaves you dizzy, frightened or unwell, and treat a strong reaction as a reason to rest rather than to push on.
