The practice
Set down the concern with your own body. Then hold continuously — not once, but as a background maintained through the day — that the same consciousness present in you is present in every other body. Then behave as though it were true, because it is.
What it works on
The verse puts a timescale on it: in a few days one becomes all-pervading. What makes that plausible is the word continuously. Held as an occasional thought it changes nothing; held as a standing assumption it changes how you treat everybody you meet.
Notes
- This is the contemplation with the most obvious effect on ordinary conduct, which is a reasonable way to check whether it is actually being held.
Practise gently
Shoonyaka offers educational and contemplative material, not medical, psychological or religious authority. Nothing here diagnoses or treats any condition. Stop any practice that leaves you dizzy, frightened or unwell, and treat a strong reaction as a reason to rest rather than to push on.
