The practice
Sit and rock the body slowly and evenly — a small movement, unhurried, with no destination. Let the rhythm continue on its own and put attention on being moved rather than on moving. The verse gives the rhythm of a vehicle in motion as the same thing found ready-made.
What it works on
One of the oldest and most universal soothing mechanisms, treated here as a legitimate dharana. The specification is rhythm and slowness; the text is content for it to come from a cart, a boat or your own body.
Notes
- A train, a bus or a swing works exactly as well and needs no effort at all.
- Slow enough that it never becomes exercise.
Practise gently
Shoonyaka offers educational and contemplative material, not medical, psychological or religious authority. Nothing here diagnoses or treats any condition. Stop any practice that leaves you dizzy, frightened or unwell, and treat a strong reaction as a reason to rest rather than to push on.
