The practice
When you catch a desire in the act of arising — for food, for a phone, for a word in an argument — end it immediately, before it has developed. Then, without any pause, turn attention to the place it came out of and rest there.
What it works on
Timing is everything. A desire caught early can be ended with a light touch; the same desire two minutes later needs suppression, which is a different and worse thing. The practice trains the catching, not the refusing.
Notes
- This is not about denying yourself anything. You can act on the desire afterwards. The practice is the moment of noticing.
Practise gently
Shoonyaka offers educational and contemplative material, not medical, psychological or religious authority. Nothing here diagnoses or treats any condition. Stop any practice that leaves you dizzy, frightened or unwell, and treat a strong reaction as a reason to rest rather than to push on.
